World Tourism Day (WTD) is celebrated each year on 27 September. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value.
Accorging to UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the theme for World Tourism Day 2023 is Tourism and Green Investments. This theme highlights the need for more and better-targeted investments in tourism to create jobs, protect the environment, and promote inclusive and sustainable development.
“This is a chance to reflect on the importance of our sector. Tourism is a pillar of our economies. It plays a central role in our societies and in our individual lives. And it offers solutions to some of our biggest challenges – including the climate emergency and the urgent need to shift to more sustainable economies”, said Zurab Pololikashvili, UNWTO Secretary -General

António Guterres Secretary- General of United Nations ( UN) explains that tourism is a powerful force for progress and mutual understanding. But in order to deliver its full benefits, this force must be protected and nurtured.
“Today, the climate emergency is threatening many travel destinations and the very survival of communities and economies that depend on tourism. And many developing countries that are severely affected by a changing climate are also facing a growing investment deficit and a cost-of-living crisis. On this World Tourism Day, we recognize the vital need for green investments to build a tourism sector that delivers for people and planet”, said António Guterres.
The idea of dedicating a day to tourism was born during the third session of the UNWTO General Assembly in Torremolinos, Spain, in 1979. It was later adopted as a global observance on 27 September 1980. World Tourism Day holds immense significance, serving as a reminder of the power of tourism to foster economic growth, cultural exchange, and understanding among countries around the world. It promotes responsible travel that benefits local communities and safeguards the environment.
