Rwanda to introduce new electricity tariffs in October

The Rwanda Energy Group (REG) has announced, via its official Twitter/X account that new electricity tariffs will starting 1St October.

The revised tariffs will be applied across several categories, including households, nonresidential buildings, service providers as well as large and small scale industries. Specific rates will also vary depending on whether industries are connected to smart meters or rely on traditional prepaid systems.

The Role of Electricity in Society

Electricity is a vital pillar of modern life and national development. Its importance cuts across multiple sectors:

Communication and technology: powers phones radio,television,internet and digital knowledge-sharing platforms.

Economy and Industry: Fuels factories machinery commerce and increasingly supports electric transport.

Health: keeps hospitals running supports medical equipment and ensures proper storage of medicines.

Education: Provides lighting in schools and enables the use of computers and digital tools.

Daily life and wellbeing: Powers household appliances such as refrigerators and food processing machines, enhances domestic comfort and contributes to tourism development.

Electricity is therefore not only a driver of economic growth but also a foundation of human wellbeing and sustainable development.
