Green Rwanda Project: Combating Climate Change and Environmental Conservation

The “Green Rwanda” project aims to address climate change and promote environmental conservation in Rwanda. Its activities include planting agroforestry trees, afforesting hills, restoring natural forests, and protecting riverbanks. A notable example is the “Green Amayaga” project, where over 1.4 million trees have been planted in its first year, representing 25% of its target.

In Bugesera District, MTN Rwanda launched the “Green Rwanda” initiative on October 2023, as part of efforts to combat climate change. This initiative was inaugurated in Gashora Sector, where the first trees were planted to mark the beginning of the project.

In Gicumbi District, the “Green Gicumbi” project was launched in 2019 to address the impacts of climate change. This six-year project operates in nine sectors and aims to benefit over 150,000 people. Its activities include protecting the Umuvumba River watershed, promoting climate-resilient agriculture, ensuring sustainable forest management, and advancing the use of environmentally friendly energy sources.

At the national level, during the 2023-2024 tree planting season, Rwanda plans to plant over 63 million trees. This initiative seeks to expand forest coverage, combat soil erosion, and boost the economy through sustainable forestry.

Overall, the “Green Rwanda” project includes agroforestry, forest restoration, river protection, distribution of energy, and training farmers in soil Protection, erosion control to enhance agricultural productivity. These efforts are focus on climate change and improving the well-being of Rwandan communities.
