Part of the Volcanoes Community Resilience project, the hub features three greenhouses, a cold room, and facilities for washing, sorting, and packaging. Beneficiaries of the project will be able to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, and sweet peppers. The horticulture hub will benefit communities that will be relocated during the first phase of the Volcanoes National Park restoration project. The ongoing pilot phase involves relocating 510 households to a newly acquired 50 Ha of land. The relocated households will be resettled in a green, smart village that comprises housing and space for economic activities. The Volcanoes National Park restoration project aims to expand and rehabilitate vital habitat for the endangered mountain gorillas—while also improving biodiversity, reducing human–wildlife conflict, and boosting socio-economic well-being for local communities.
