
East African University of Rwanda Students who are members of the environmental club were
reminded to become the voice to the voiceless species as to contribute to the preservation of
environment.
It was during a one-day workshop whereby FOJO Media Institute environmental journalists held
an environmental awareness raising visit to over 25 environmental clubs’ members from the East
African University of Rwanda (EAUR).
During this event, the EAUR Environmental Club, presented achievements from their endeavors
which include Waste management initiative, Successful outreach in secondary schools and
initiating collaboration with UR Remera Environmental club in Waste Assessment activity.
Other initiatives in progress include tree planting in universities, other higher education institutes
and in secondary schools around EAUR, with core aim to promote clean air and sustainable
environmental practices.
Annonciatta Byukusenge, who presented on behalf of other FOJO Media Institute journalists
commended the students’ environmental club for great achievements and reminded to keep being
the voice of voiceless Species by making advocacy and upholding the habit of being Accurate
data driven reporter.
She has insisted that protection of environment is equal to preservation of human species. “If Our
Environment destroyed, Our Life is also Destroyed”. Annonciatta Reminded.
The Fojo Media Institute representatives lectured to the club members the Impacts of
environment degradation and climate change, Science Journalism, Environmental Investigative
Reporting, Carbon Market and Carbon Credit Operations and A synopsis that triggered
Participants to think out of the box while they are reporting on environment.
Additional to the presentation, an interactive discussion engaged students and some Rwanda
Environmental Initiatives were discussed.
The ban on plastic bags program was implemented since 2008 and there have been other projects
aimed at maintaining Rwanda green which include for instance Green Amayaga, Green Gicumbi
and other national Projects designed to addressing environmental degradation issues facing the
Earth nowadays.
According to Annonciatta Byukusenge, not only these projects protect the environment but also
created employment opportunities for Rwandans.
Salome Niyigena, a year One Student in Mass Communication and Journalism at EAUR and
member of the EAUR Environmental Club, Praised FOJO Media representative for delivering an
eye-opening session that inspired her to pursue environmental reporting. She expressed her
appreciation for the knowledge and insights shared during the workshop, describing it as a
turning point in her academic journey.
The workshop marked a significant step to build capacity for the next generation of
environmental reporters by equipping them with skills on effective reporting. The FOJO Media
Representative pledged continued support to EAUR Environmental Club through future training
programs and collaboration. Despite being students, the club members reaffirmed their
commitment to driving environmental action and combating climate change in campus and
beyond.
