The Role of Research in the Sustainable Development of African Universities

African universities empha saysize the need to strengthen research capacity and increase the number of highly qualified lecturers with PhD degrees to enhance the quality of education.

Professor Didas Kayihura Muganga, Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Rwanda, stated that Rwanda is proud to have over 500 students pursuing PhD programs. He said, “We are about to have many highly qualified lecturers who will provide the desired quality of education.”

He further mentioned that the University of Rwanda recently ranked 6th in a research-based evaluation of universities in Sub-Saharan Africa. The university outperformed many others in terms of education quality and meeting academic standards.

Prof. Muganga emphasized the importance of developing teaching materials that provide solutions tailored to Africa’s needs. He also highlighted the need to identify the unique strengths of universities and enhance them to ensure excellence.

He discussed the significance of research conducted through internships, which requires collaboration between universities and other institutions, including NGOs.

Arasha Rashidian, Director of Science Dissemination at the World Health Organization, emphasized the need for research facilities, particularly for medical students. He noted that having practical spaces helps improve the quality of education by allowing students to apply their knowledge effectively.

Research and the increase of PhD holders are key priorities that shou yald be addressed to ensure Africa attains
high-quality education, ultimately accelerating sustainable development across various fields.
